ISS Property — Former Bakkavor Foods Facility, Wigan
This case study records a £40,000 structural-steel surface-preparation and fire-protection coating project at the former Bakkavor Foods facility in Wigan. The recorded duration was 150 hours.
The brief
ISS Property required the structural steelwork to be prepared to an Sa 2.5 surface finish before the specified intumescent fire-protection coating stage. Some steel sections were exposed to the elements, making weather conditions a significant consideration.
One coordinated preparation and coating sequence
The project required a complete one-stop solution. Shot blasting was followed immediately by the application of a certified primer and topcoat to meet fire-protection requirements and prevent flash rusting.
Programme planning
A comprehensive site survey and steel-section measurement allowed blasting time to be calculated and the work to be programmed. Extended working hours and weekend shifts used favourable weather windows. The project was completed in 10 days, five days ahead of programme, without compromising quality or compliance.
Supplied before-and-after project images
The supplied before image records the existing structural steelwork condition at the former facility. The supplied after image records the steelwork after the project’s preparation and coating sequence.
